FOURTEEN

Lizzy curled up in bed with the blankets tucked around her like a little kid afraid of monsters. She knew her mother hadn’t believed her poorly delivered lie about being sick, but she really didn’t care. As long as she didn’t have to go to school and face the Macero twins, her mom could be as annoyed as she wanted to be. Conflict avoidance wasn’t usually her style—she was generally a fairly self-confident kid who didn’t dodge the hard stuff that life threw her way—but in this situation, she just wasn’t sure what else to do.

Those bitches were brutal.

Maybe it was time for them to leave Whisper Falls. It wasn’t the first time she had thought about it. They were supposed to be safe here, but so far, that had not been the case. They had been targeted for murder by child-trafficking survivalists, her best friend had been burned alive, and she had been kidnapped by a psychopathic narco-queen. The teenage years were supposed to be hard but things were getting ridiculous. All it would take is one call from her mother to the marshals and they would be whisked out of town before dawn, never to be seen around Whisper Falls again.

Right now, that sounded like heaven.

She was wiping away tears when she heard the front door open downstairs. For a moment she panicked, but then she heard a familiar voice call out her name.

“Lizzy, it’s Luke. You home?”

She really wasn’t in the mood for company and thought about not answering, but she knew Stone wouldn’t leave without searching the entire house. Better to just get this over with.

“In my bedroom,” she replied, raising her voice to make sure he heard her.

She heard his footsteps coming up the stairs and down the hall. “You decent?” he asked.

“What if I’m not?”

“Then I’ll wait out here until you are.”

Lizzy rolled her eyes, shook her head, and said, “I’m good. You can come in.”

He nudged open the door with his foot. “Thought maybe we could talk.”

“Whatever.”

“You hungry? We could go get something to eat, chat over some food.”

“I don’t feel like going anywhere.” She threw off the blanket. “I’ll make us sandwiches.” She rolled off the bed, shoved her feet into some slippers, and headed for the door, brushing past him. “Follow me.”

He trailed her down into the kitchen, where she fished a package of deli meat from one of the drawers in the fridge and started slapping honey-glazed ham slices onto some wheat bread. “Mustard or mayo?” she asked.

“I’m good. Just make yourself one.”

“I’ll bet Jesus wouldn’t make me eat alone.”

“Playing the Jesus card, huh? Cheap shot.” Stone smiled at her. “Okay, make mine with mustard. Putting mayonnaise on ham is some kind of sin.”

“Duly noted. You’re repulsed by mayo.”

She doused his sandwich with enough mustard to turn a whole rainbow yellow, dropped it onto a plate, and shoved it in front of him. “Bon appétit.”

She made herself a sandwich—using the mayonnaise out of some kind of immature spite—and took small bites with zero enthusiasm.
